The Girl Who Try to ‘Buy’ Her Dad
As usual, Bob, the branch manager of an office in New York, goes home at 11 in the night. Not as usual, Sarah, his daughter that still in third year of elementary school, opens the door for him. Seems like she has waiting for him for a long time.
“Why you do not sleep yet?” he asks Sarah while kissing her forehead.
Commonly, Sarah has slept when Bob comes home and will get up when he will go to the office in the morning.
While tagging along her Dad, Sarah says, “I am waiting you home, Dad. I wanna ask you how much is your salary?”
“Why do you ask that? You want to ask some money again?”
“Oh, no. Uhm, I am just curious,” Sarah answers.
“You can count by yourself. Every day, I work in 10 hours and am paid about $70. Every month, I work 22 days although sometime I have extra working time.”
Sarah runs to her room and takes a piece of paper and a pencil. When Bob changes his clothes, Sarah comes to him. “If for one day you are paid $70 for 10 hours, means that one hour you would be paid $7,” she says.
“Yes, honey. You are right.. Now, brush your teeth and go sleep,” Bob commands.
Instead of doing her Dad’s command, Sarah asks again.
“Dad, may I borrow your money? About $1.5?”
“Whadaya think? It has been night. What will you do with the money now?? I am tired. Go sleep, Sarah.”
“But, Dad…”
Bob is getting mad. He is very tired and really need some sleep. Then he shouts, “I said: sleep, Sarah!!!”
Sarah gets shocked. Never his Dad did shout her like that. Then she runs in to her room.
Bob feels sorry. He realizes that he does something bad to his daughter. He is coming to Sarah’s room and while coming-a-near he sees her daughter crying. In Sarah’s hand, there are $2.
“I am sorry, honey. I really love you. But why did you ask for money tonight? What will you do with the money? It is twelve o’clock, Sarah. If you want to buy any dolls, you can do it tomorrow. And I would give you more than $2,” Bob says.
“Dad, I did not ask the money. I just want to borrow it. I will refund it after my pin money enough.”
“Okay..okay… But, what will you do with the money?”
“I have waited for you since 5 o’clock. I want to ask you playing ’snake and stairs’ with me. Just 30 minutes. Mom often says that your money is valuable. So, I want to exchange your time, Dad. I opened my savings and found only $2. I need to borrow your money so that I can buy your 30-minutes-time,” Sarah explains sobbingly.
Bob gets speechless. He hugs that young lady tightly and feels so touched. He just realized that the money he looked for by working hard has not enough and might be never been enough to ‘buy’ his children’s happiness.
